The Benefits of Heavy Bag Stands

Heavy bag work is an excellent addition to any fitness or self defence training program,

providing a full cardiovascular workout whilst strengthening arms, legs, shoulders and the abdomen. The hanging bag is free to move when struck, and will sway during training which is very beneficial for improving hand eye co-ordination and footwork skills.

When looking to purchase a bag you will need to decide from the myriad of makes and models on the market. Your primary concern should be with finding a bag that suits your punching style, weight, and strength. Bag weights vary between 40lb and 100lb. The lighter bags are more suitable improving coordination and footwork practice.
Heavier bags are more suitable for heavy hitters and for strength training. There will be considerably less movement of the bag during the routine, and the increased weight will absorb harder blows. Should you wish to use the bag for kickboxing, choose a heavier bag as this will provide greater resistance for more powerful attacking moves with the legs?

For standard boxing, a 170lb male of medium height should fine a 60 lb bag sufficient for a good all round workout. Heavier hitters and taller boxers should consider an 80 lb to 100lb bag.

In the home, a heavy bag can be a permanent fixture mounted onto the wall of your gymnasium or garage, or can be hung from the ceiling.  Most drywall cannot withstand too many heavy bag hits, so it is important to measure properly and ensure there is sufficient room for the bag to swing unhindered. Hanging the bag from the ceiling will require a strong steel mounting, firmly fixed to a wooden joist. The fixing is put under considerable strain during a workout, and many a home boxer has been left with a large hole in their ceiling from an inadequate mounting. Even when securely fitted, a workout with the bag can send vibrations throughout the house, much to the annoyance of other household members.

Heavy bag stands provide a useful alternative, which is especially beneficial when space is at a premium. Small home exercise areas and gymnasiums benefit from being able to easily move the bag away to a corner when not in use, and can be wheeled out into the garden for a workout in the fresh air.

Many models of stand come with a mounting for a speedball, which will add an extra dimension to your training programme, concentrating more on hand eye coordination and technique while the heavy bag training increases your strength and stamina.

For many, heavy bag stands provide the best all round option, with more functionality and safety features and are an essential piece of equipment for anyone with limited training space in the home.
